The Mystery of the Trinity

Faithful to the doctrinal tradition of the Orthodox Church, The Mystery of the Trinity reflects the thought of the Eastern Fathers from the time of the Apostles to the end of the Byzantine era. The theology of the Fathers cannot be separated from public prayer, and it is in liturgical creation that they have expressed the common faith of the Church in the most authentic, living manner. The mystery of the Trinity unfolds therefore in worship and the sacraments.

A close reading of the Scriptures is the necessary prerequisite for a deeper understanding of the mysteries of the faith. That explains and justifies the most important place given to Scripture in the work. The convergence and the inner coherence between biblical theology and the thought of the Church are indeed striking. It is the same Spirit of Truth that inspires the Scriptures and vivifies the Church.

Boris Bobrinskoy has been professor of dogmatic theology at the St Sergius Institute of Orthodox theology since 1953, and since 1968 at the Institute Sup?rieur des ?tudes Oecum?niques. He is a member of the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches. He has written numerous articles on the theology of the Trinity and the Eucharist and on the ecumenical movement.
